Spice Island

If you're strolling down Eltham High Street in southeast London and craving bold flavors with a cozy dining vibe, Spice Island at 52 Eltham High St, SE9 1BT might just be the stop you didn’t know you needed. This place doesn’t just serve food-it delivers experiences wrapped in aromatic spices, rich sauces, and dishes that linger in memory long after the plates are cleared.

Step inside Spice Island and you’ll find a casual yet comfortable setting, perfect for a solo dinner or catching up with friends over a steaming plate of something deeply flavorful. While it may not scream fancy on the outside, the dining experience packs all the essentials: warm service, a varied menu, and an inviting atmosphere that makes you want to settle in and stay a while.

The menu here blends classic Indian cuisine with British comfort-think curry favorites with a few creative twists. While exact dish names may rotate or update, the essence is always the same: full-flavored, generously portioned, and served with a side of warmth. The happy-hour food options offer great value, especially if you're dropping by after work. And yes, late-night food is a highlight-because sometimes, a butter chicken at 10 pm is exactly what the soul craves.

You’re not just getting food here; Spice Island rounds out the experience with offerings like beer, wine, and alcoholic beverages to match the spice levels and elevate the meal. For something more casual, a well-made coffee or simple dessert seals the deal. Whether you’re dining in for lunch, enjoying a laid-back dinner, or grabbing a quick takeaway, their service adapts seamlessly to your mood and schedule.

One thing that sets Spice Island apart is its flexibility. From full table service for those who love to linger, to delivery and takeaway for nights in, it caters to the pace of real life. The place includes amenities that matter-like an accessible toilet-and makes solo diners feel just as welcome as groups.

What makes it different from other spots in the area? It's the blend of accessibility, late-night offerings, and the comforting familiarity of the food. While many Indian restaurants stick to formulaic menus, Spice Island has a local touch. The seasoning feels considered rather than generic. Sauces are layered and flavorful, not just spicy for the sake of it. Plus, they understand the London lifestyle-fast-paced, busy, yet always hungry for something satisfying.

For solo diners especially, this place is a gem. You’re not rushed, the staff is attentive without being overbearing, and you get a good mix of crowd buzz and quiet moments depending on the time of day. Whether you’re just popping in for a bite or making it your Friday night tradition, Spice Island comfortably walks the line between familiar and fresh.

A few useful tips: Go early in the evening if you want the most peaceful dine-in experience. Their dinner service gets busier closer to prime time, which is a good sign-it means the food is doing its job. If you’re ordering dessert, ask the staff for recommendations-they sometimes offer off-menu sweets or seasonal treats.

So, if you find yourself near Eltham and the evening calls for something spiced, satisfying, and served with a genuine smile, Spice Island is a name worth remembering.

I actually placed an uber delivery- never ordered at this restaurant before but oh was it worth the wait- chicken prices were huge and the tikka masala sauce was perfect consistency- with free deal of Bombay pots was a nice touch- the Sagg pinear was so good and the potatoes were big, sweat and perfect texture.First time for coconut rice and I will deffo be ordering again- the delivery driver was polite and apologised for the wait but expressed how good the food would be be and he wasn’t wrong- yes the containers were a little oily but that really didn’t take away from the amazing taste - thank you and see you again

I have not had a meal from Spice Island for some time but found it easy to order and book online now. You can ask for bespoke dishes without resistance. The meal was very good value with generous portions and quality meat, cooked perfectly tender by a chef who obviously has the knowledge and experience. The owner and this time, 'delivery driver', looks well and is as genial as he ever was. Thank you, H.
